Do’s and Don’ts of Caring for Artificial Grass

Taking care of artificial grass is easier than caring for a live lawn and brings numerous benefits, but that doesn’t mean it’s foolproof. Some issues are easily avoidable, but they’re consistently overlooked and often lead to costly repair or maintenance visits. Prevent headaches and service calls by sharing these tips from Arizona Turf Depot to help your customers keep their turf vibrant all year round. We have a handy Care and Maintenance Guide on this site as well with more details.

Artificial Lawn Maintenance

Do: Remove Debris

It might not seem like a big deal to leave twigs and leaves on your fake grass, but failing to remove waste promptly can lead to problems like mildew and mold. Clean your turf regularly and pick up debris as soon as you see it—especially pet waste.

Don’t: Use a Brush or Rake with Metal or Wire Bristles

Use a light plastic rake or thick-bristled wide broom rather than wire or metal teeth to pick up larger, heavier debris to avoid tearing or damaging turf. For lighter debris, use an artificial grass power broom or blower. Be cautious if using the suction setting.

Do: Use the Right Water Pressure

This tip is frequently overlooked. Greater water pressure often results in less cleaning time, but that convenience comes at the cost of turf health. Pressure that is too high can damage your fake grass and dramatically shorten its lifespan. Instead, be patient and use a water and soap solution to clean any unpleasant residue left behind. Products such as Simple Green also can help with caring for artificial turf.

Don’t: Use Your Turf as a Driveway

Driving over your turf can cause permanent damage as changing tire directions can tear grass blades and leave unsightly holes. You might even see stains from fuel and oil, some of which are almost impossible to remove without the use of costly supplies. Avoid parking or driving over your artificial lawn to keep it in the best possible condition for as long as possible.
