How to choose the best paver color for desert landscaping projects

The desert has distinct colors that make up its landscape. Much of the United States is covered in greens of various hues, from the light grasses of the prairie to deep, forest green shades of pine trees at high elevations. But our desert palette is one of muted shades of red, brown, and gray.

This presents a challenge for those designing landscapes in places like the Phoenix area, as much of the metro area embraces the natural desert style. This is especially true in newer suburbs lined with xeriscaping. However, some parts of town, such as Phoenix’s Arcadia neighborhood, have their own lush plant life that has become part of the community fabric over time.

With so many different landscapes around the desert metropolis that is the Valley of the Sun, it can be a challenge for landscapers in Arizona to choose the best pavers for their clients. Generally, your best option is to choose pavers with colors that will complement your clients’ existing or desired landscapes.

Because the desert is composed of neutral tones, pavers that blend in well while still remaining obvious as a path through a landscape are a great option. Let plants or artificial turf provide pops of color to serve as focal points, and leave the pavers’ neutral tones to blend in well with the surrounding rocks, sand or other ground covering. Pavers in muted tones of gray, tan or red will do the job.

If you’re working with clients in an historic neighborhood with a lot of grass and mature trees, pavers will form more of a contrast with the surrounding lawn. That’s okay, as paved walkways have traditionally been part of garden landscapes for thousands of years.

Tones reminiscent of natural soil and rocks will help keep things looking tranquil in these landscapes. While it is less common than landscaping that embraces desert plants and ground coverings, it’s a great idea to be prepared to work with these landscapes as well.

Regardless of your clients’ existing landscapes or desired remodeling, pavers should generally avoid bright tones. They can distract from the beautiful plants and water features of a garden or yard that’s had much thought put into its design.

However, above all, it’s important to remember that the customer is always right; if your client asks for a specific paver color and doesn’t want to hear recommendations for the most aesthetically pleasing options, then give them what they want. Everyone has their own unique tastes, and what works for the majority may not work for your individual customer.
